Open box – unused

This Varia VS4 has never been used and comes with all original accessories. The original packaging may be missing, or the box has been opened. You get the same 2-year Bean Bros warranty as on a new VS4, and 15 days to return it.

Same grinder, different box story. These VS4s have had their box opened, or reached us without their retail packaging, but not one of them has ground a single bean. Nothing has been repaired or refurbished: burrs, motor and accessories are exactly as they left Varia. Pick your colour above: black, white, silver, rose or sand. Prefer a sealed box? See the new Varia VS4.

What "open box" means at Bean Bros

  • Unused: never ground coffee, no wear on the burrs.
  • Complete: all original accessories are included.
  • Packaging: the retail box may be opened, marked or missing.
  • Warranty: 2 years with service in Europe, same as a new VS4.
  • Returns: 15 days to change your mind.

Why the VS4 is worth a spot on your counter

  • Espresso and filter from one grinder – 53 mm conical burrs and stepless 10-micron adjustment take you from espresso-fine to French press in about 2.5 turns.
  • Speed you can taste – a 200 W brushless motor with planetary gearbox runs at 150–300 RPM. Start around 150–180 RPM for espresso and 250–300 RPM for filter.
  • Built for single dosing – the one-piece burr chamber keeps retention ultra-low: 0.00–0.06 g at an espresso setting in Varia's test (10 g dose, with RDT).
  • Less static – active ionisation means fewer clumps and less mess on the counter.
  • Tool-free cleaning – a 10-degree twist releases the whole burr module and cuts motor power; click it back in and alignment is restored.

Varia VS4 Grinder — Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
1. Is the Varia VS4 a single-dose grinder?

Yes. The VS4 is designed specifically for single-dose grinding, with a hopper capacity of 30–40 g. This ensures maximum freshness, accuracy, and extremely low retention. The workflow encourages dosing beans before each grind for the best results.

2. What grind range does the VS4 support?

The VS4 is capable of grinding from Turkish/espresso fine (100–200 microns) all the way to coarse French press (1000+ microns). The full adjustment range is approximately 2.5 revolutions from zero to fully open, providing excellent versatility for espresso, moka pot, pour-over, drip, AeroPress, French press, and cold brew.

3. How do I adjust the grind size?

The grinder uses a stepless 10-micron internal adjustment system.

Turn clockwise for finer grind.

Turn anticlockwise for coarser grind.
The adjustment scale is marked from fine to coarse, and the factory calibration aligns “0” with the burr touch point (do not grind at “0”).

4. What motor and speed does the VS4 use?

The VS4 is powered by a 200 W brushless DC motor with a planetary gearbox. The motor speed is adjustable between 150–300 RPM, allowing control over heat, clarity, and grind uniformity during operation.

5. How do I set the RPM and start grinding?

Set your desired RPM using the control dial on the side of the grinder.
Espresso typically benefits from lower RPM (e.g., 150–180).
Filter coffee may use higher RPM (e.g., 250–300).
Press the power button to begin; the burrs will start rotating immediately at your selected speed.

6. What is the proper way to use the bellows?

After grinding, once the burrs have stopped, press the single-dose bellows to blow out any remaining grounds from the grinding chamber. This helps ensure the VS4’s ultra-low retention performance and a cleaner workflow.

7. How do I maintain or clean the grinder?

The VS4 features a tool-free quick-release chamber and hopper collar for easy cleaning.

You can choose between:
- Surface Clean (quick brushing of the burr chamber)
- Full Chamber Removal (removing the lower chamber for deep cleaning)
- Complete Disassembly (removing the outer burr, mounting plate, gaskets, and carrier ring—recommended only when needed)

The manual provides step-by-step instructions for each level of cleaning (Section 6).

8. How often should I clean the grinder?

Light maintenance such as brushing or using the bellows should be done after every grinding session.
A more thorough chamber clean is recommended weekly for regular users, and full disassembly is only necessary if you suspect clogging, oil buildup, or if you are replacing burrs.

9. How do I find the burr zero point?

To determine the burr touch point:
- Ensure the grinder is off and unplugged.
- Remove beans from the hopper.
- Turn the adjustment collar slowly clockwise while listening and feeling for the first point of contact.
- Stop immediately when you hear a faint “chirp” or feel resistance. This is your burr zero reference.

10. Does removing the hopper affect my calibration?

No. The VS4’s design isolates the calibration thread from the hopper thread. This prevents drift, cross-threading, and eliminates the need to recalibrate when removing the hopper for cleaning.

11. How do I avoid motor overload or overheating?

The VS4 includes a built-in thermal protection system.
If the motor or driver becomes too hot:
- The grinder may pause automatically after approximately 20 seconds of no coffee being detected in the grinding chamber.
- Allow the grinder to rest before restarting.

12. Can I grind at the finest setting?

You can grind extremely fine, but never grind at the “0” burr touch point, as this can cause burr damage. Use caution when grinding near the finest end of the scale, especially for Turkish-fine settings.

13. What is the grinder made of?

The body is constructed from precision-machined aluminum alloy with stainless-steel components, ensuring stability, reduced vibration, and long-term durability.

14. What are the physical dimensions and weight?

Dimensions: 161.4 × 97.7 × 337 mm
Weight: approx. 5.27 kg
The stable, compact footprint makes it ideal for home and professional environments.

15. What should I do if grounds are not feeding properly?

Check for:
- A clogged chute (clean with the brush)
- Incorrect grind setting (too fine for the beans)
- Beans stuck in the hopper (shake gently or remove lid)
- If the problem persists, follow the troubleshooting and maintenance steps in Section 6.

16. Can the VS4 grind flavored or oily beans?

Yes, but with caution. Flavored or extremely oily beans may create buildup faster, requiring more frequent cleaning to maintain performance and prevent clogging.

17. Varia VS3 or VS4: which should I buy?

Pick the VS3 Gen 2 for a compact, simpler grinder at a lower price. Pick the VS4 if you want variable speed, bigger 53 mm burrs and faster grinding (up to 2 g/s).

18. Varia VS4 or VS6?

The VS6 is the flagship with 58 mm flat burrs, an optional conical set and 500–1600 RPM. The VS4 is smaller and lighter with 53 mm conical burrs.

19. What warranty do I get?

2 years, with service in Europe through Bean Bros as Varia's European distributor.

Stepless 10-Micron Adjustment System

The VS4’s 10-micron stepless adjustment system delivers precise control for espresso and filter dialing. Its reinforced internal thread mechanism prevents wear, drift, and cross-threading, ensuring smooth, dependable adjustments over years of use.

A built-in micro-calibration system allows ±20-micron shifts to fine-tune the burr zero point, compensating for burr wear or alignment needs. This ensures stable, consistent grind settings even with long-term use, supporting both experimentation and repeatability.

Modular Drive & Chamber Assembly

The VS4’s modular design allows the full burr, shaft, and bearing assembly to be removed using a patented bayonet quick-connect system. This provides instant access for cleaning or inspection while maintaining a self-registering mechanical interface.

Every reinstallation restores perfect alignment automatically, eliminating the need for calibration. The modular platform also supports future burr and chamber upgrades, making the VS4 a long-term, adaptable grinder designed for precision and ease of maintenance.

Quick Connect Hopper System

The Varia VS4 introduces a patented quick-connect hopper system, designed for instant, tool-free access to the grinding chamber.

Using a precision-engineered bayonet mechanism, the hopper collar locks and releases with a 10 degree turn - granting complete chamber access in under one second.

When disengaged, the system also automatically disconnects the power circuit between the motor and chamber assembly, ensuring absolute safety during cleaning or maintenance.

Reconnection is equally simple: the hopper aligns and locks with a smooth, precise motion that restores full power and calibration instantly.

Electrodynamic Flow Geometry

Every internal contour of the chamber is formed using Electrodynamic Flow Geometry - a proprietary surface topology designed to guide ground coffee along a controlled, turbulence-free trajectory.

This architecture minimizes static charge buildup and channels particles in a smooth, laminar flow, effectively reducing friction, clumping, and overall waste.

In combination with the fully anodised, single-piece chamber and grounds spindle, the system creates an exceptionally smooth, low-adhesion surface. Coffee moves effortlessly through the grind path, maintaining stable density and uniform distribution from burr to chute.

By integrating advanced chamber geometry with low-friction anodised surfaces, the Varia VS4 delivers a level of precision, consistency, and cleanliness rarely achieved in compact grinders - a finely tuned interaction of airflow, particle behaviour, and electrostatic management.

Modular Drive & Chamber Assembly

The Varia VS4 introduces a patented modular chamber and drive assembly, allowing the entire burr and driveshaft system to be removed from the grinder body in one seamless motion.

The hopper quick-connect mechanism attaches and releases via a precision-engineered bayonet system. Once released, the entire burr chamber, drive shaft, and bearing assembly lift out as a unified module - laser-aligned, self-contained, and mechanically isolated from the motor housing.

Because the burr alignment, shaft bearings, and chamber geometry exist as a single machined ecosystem, the VS4 maintains consistent concentricity and zero mechanical drift over time.

Every reconnection re-establishes factory-grade accuracy - no recalibration, no misalignment, no compromise.

Low retention Design

The Varia VS4 features a patented, world-first single-body burr chamber, CNC-machined from a solid alloy block and fully anodised to achieve exceptionally low material adhesion. Its uninterrupted, joint-free construction removes part lines entirely, forming a continuous internal channel that enhances coffee flow and significantly reduces grind retention.

Every internal surface including the grounds spindle - is precision milled and anodised to an ultra-smooth finish, minimising static, preventing coffee accumulation, and ensuring outstanding long-term durability. Combined with Varia’s quick-connection bayonet system, the chamber can be detached without tools for effortless cleaning and reattached instantly with perfect alignment and calibration.
