Limescale is the silent espresso killer. According to Puly Caff, a layer of just 0.3 mm on a boiler or heating element insulates it enough to drop the temperature by around 5 °C. Your machine works harder, heats more slowly, and the shot in your cup turns sour and under-extracted. Copenhagen tap water is hard, so descaling is a fixed part of our routine, and Puly Cleaner Baby (the pack labelled Puly Cleaner® Powder) is the descaler we trust for it.

Which machines it suits
Puly Cleaner Baby is made for home and office espresso machines and electric kettles. It also descales filter coffee machines, boilers, heat exchangers and heating elements. Not suitable for aluminium. If your machine has an aluminium boiler or thermoblock, or its manual sets out its own descaling procedure, follow the manufacturer's advice.
How to descale your espresso machine
- Dissolve 1 sachet in 1 litre of water.
- Pour the solution into the water tank.
- Run the pump, switching it on and off every 30 seconds, until the tank is empty.
- Rinse the tank, fill it with fresh drinking water and run it through the same way until empty.
Descaling a kettle
Dissolve 1 sachet in 1 litre of water, pour it into the kettle and heat it. Switch off, empty, then rinse well with drinking water.
How often should you descale?
It depends on your water hardness. Puly Caff recommends descaling at least every 30 days, before scale starts to clog valves, filters and water lines. One box gives you ten descales, which is roughly ten months of monthly care for one machine.

Safety: Warning. Causes serious eye irritation. Keep out of reach of children. Read the label before use. If powder gets in your eyes, rinse cautiously with water for several minutes.
How often should I descale my espresso machine?
It depends on how hard your water is. Puly Caff recommends descaling at least once every 30 days. Scale insulates the boiler and heating element, and just 0.3 mm can cost around 5 °C of brew temperature, so in hard-water areas a monthly descale keeps your espresso sweet and your machine healthy.
Can I descale my espresso machine with vinegar instead?
We'd rather you didn't. Vinegar is hard to dose and can leave a smell and taste behind. Puly Cleaner Baby is a pre-dosed citric-acid powder that is odourless, tasteless and HACCP-compliant: one sachet in 1 litre of water, then a full tank of fresh water to rinse. Always check your machine's manual first.
What are the ingredients in Puly descaler?
The pack lists citric acid and tartaric acid. According to the safety data sheet, citric acid makes up the vast majority (90–100 %), with less than 3 % tartaric acid. It is not suitable for aluminium parts.
Can I use Puly Cleaner Baby on a kettle or filter coffee machine?
Yes. For a kettle, dissolve one sachet in 1 litre of water, heat it, empty it and rinse well with drinking water. Puly Caff also lists filter coffee machines: use one sachet per litre and follow the descaling steps in your machine's manual, then rinse with clean water.
