Most uneven espresso shots are decided before the water ever arrives. Ground coffee lands in the basket as a little hill, and tamping straight onto it just presses the hill flat at a slant. The Varia ORBI Distributor deals with the bit in between: set its 58 mm face to the depth you want, give it a turn, and three angled blades sweep the coffee into a flat, even bed that's ready for the tamper.
Pre-order
The ORBI Distributor is on pre-order, so you can order it now even while it shows 0 in stock. We expect to ship it from our warehouse in Denmark in November 2026. You pay at checkout as usual, and we'll email you as soon as yours is on its way. Questions? Chat with us
Why level before you tamp?
Water takes the easiest route through the puck. If one side of the bed is looser or higher than the other, that's where the shot rushes through while the rest stays under-extracted. A distributor doesn't replace your tamper. It gives the tamper a level, consistent surface, so the tamp presses straight down instead of locking in a slope.
What it does
- Three angled blades – Turn the distributor over the grounds and the blades spread the coffee across the basket and smooth the top.
- Depth you set once – The threaded top section raises or lowers the 58 mm distribution face. Find the working depth for your basket and dose, then lock it.
- Stays where you put it – The locked thread holds the setting, so tomorrow's shot starts from the same depth as today's.
- Made for ORBI – A 58 mm tool designed around ORBI espresso preparation, in the same six colours as the machine.
- Silicone protective base – Somewhere soft to park it on the counter between shots.
Three steps in your routine
- Set. Turn the threaded top to the working depth for your dose and lock it.
- Turn. Place the distributor on the basket and give it a few turns until the surface is level.
- Tamp. Follow with the Varia Calibre Tamper or the tamper you already use, then put the distributor back on its silicone base.
Our take
A distributor is one of the cheapest ways to take randomness out of your espresso routine. It won't rescue stale beans or the wrong grind size, but once those are right, it makes every shot start from the same flat line. Set the depth for your ORBI, lock it and stop thinking about it.
Pairs well with

Varia ORBI Distributor — Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
1. Does a distributor replace a tamper?
No. The distributor spreads and levels the grounds; the tamper then compresses them. Use it right before the Varia Calibre Tamper or the tamper you already own.
2. Distributor or WDT tool: which do I need?
They do different jobs. A WDT tool's needles break up clumps through the whole bed, while a distributor levels the top surface and sets a consistent height. Plenty of home baristas use both: WDT first, then the distributor, then the tamp.
3. How do I set the depth?
Turn the threaded top section to raise or lower the 58 mm face, then lock it. Adjust it when you change your dose or basket. Once it's set for your recipe, leave it alone.
4. Does it fit ORBI Portable and ORBI PRO, and other machines?
It's a 58 mm tool that Varia designed for ORBI espresso preparation, and both ORBI Portable and ORBI PRO use a 58 mm basket. Varia hasn't published the exact face diameter or depth range yet, so if you want to use it on another 58 mm machine, chat with us first and we'll check the fit.
5. Can I order it now?
Yes. It's on pre-order, so you can order it even while it shows 0 in stock, and it ships from our warehouse in Denmark. You get a 2-year warranty and 15 days to return it.
