The Varia ORBI Portable is a battery-powered espresso machine that heats its own water, takes a full-size 58 mm basket and weighs your shot as it lands in the cup. Swap the brewing module and the same 1.6 kg cylinder makes filter coffee or brews a Nespresso-type capsule, all following recipes you sync from the Varia app.

- Runs on battery – The 4000 mAh battery is good for roughly 6–8 espressos if you fill up with 92 °C water, or 2–3 starting from room-temperature water. Your recipe nudges that number up or down. Recharge over 30 W USB-C, and leave the cable in if you want to keep brewing.
- Heats its own water – The 130 ml boiler gets a 60 ml espresso volume up to temperature in about 2–3 minutes from 24 °C, and takes a full tank to 92 °C in about 5. Hot water from the kettle gives it a head start and saves battery.

- One cylinder, three brew styles – Click in the module you need: the portafilter for espresso, the dripper for filter (staged pours and flow-rate profiles on Varia FLO 45 papers), or the capsule holder for Nespresso-type capsules. Even a capsule can follow its own pressure curve.
- Stops by weight – The cup has a scale that reads to 0.01 g. Tell ORBI your dose, it works out the yield from the recipe ratio and ends the shot there: 18 g in on a 1:2 recipe means 36 g in the cup.
- Your recipes, offline – Grab recipes from roasters and creators in the Varia app, or write your own, then sync over Bluetooth or Wi-Fi. They're saved in slots on the machine itself, so no signal is needed once you're out the door, and the 2.8-inch touchscreen talks you through every brew.
- Rock-steady temperature – 0.1 °C PID control keeps the water exactly where the recipe wants it.
Three steps to a shot
- Choose. Pick an espresso, filter or capsule recipe on the touchscreen.
- Prep. Dose and tamp (or drop in a capsule), add water and follow the on-screen cues.
- Brew. Tap start. ORBI handles heat, pressure or flow as the recipe says and cuts the shot when your cup hits the target weight.
Our take: great coffee shouldn't stay at home
This is the espresso machine we'd pack for a weekend in a Danish summer house: same recipe, same pressure profile, same yield, no kitchen required. It's also a neat answer for a small flat or an office desk. One honest note: no machine can rescue stale beans or the wrong grind. Bring freshly roasted coffee and a good grinder, like the Varia VS3 Gen 2 or the Varia VS4, and ORBI does the rest.

1. How many espressos do I get per charge?
Roughly 6–8 if you fill it with 92 °C water, and 2–3 if you start from room temperature, because heating cold water takes the most energy. Your recipe settings shift the number a little.
2. Does it heat its own water?
Yes. The 130 ml boiler takes about 2–3 minutes for a 60 ml espresso volume and about 5 minutes for a full tank to 92 °C (both from 24 °C). Start with hot water from a kettle and it's quicker and easier on the battery.
3. Can I brew while it's plugged in?
Yes. Plug in a 30 W USB-C charger and you can keep brewing while it charges.
4. Does it have a built-in grinder?
No, ORBI is the espresso machine; you bring the ground coffee. Freshly ground beans make all the difference, so pair it with a Varia VS3 Gen 2 or VS4 grinder.
5. Which capsules and filter papers fit?
The capsule holder is made for Nespresso-type capsules. For filter, use Varia FLO 45 flat wave papers.
6. Do I need the app every time I brew?
No. Use the Varia app to find, write and sync recipes. Once synced, they sit in slots on the machine, and you brew straight from the touchscreen, no phone or signal needed.
7. Should I pick Portable or PRO?
Go Portable if you want great espresso wherever you are: it's the machine plus the cup scale, on battery. Pick ORBI PRO if ORBI will live on your counter and you want the Home Dock's second scale to compare what goes in with what comes out.
8. What about warranty, returns and delivery?
