Overview
Ask ten baristas how hard they tamp and you'll get ten answers, most of which change depending on how the morning is going. The Varia Calibre takes that variable off the table. Turn the handle to 15, 20, 25 or 30 kg, check the number in the little window, and every press loads the spring to your setting and releases it against the 58 mm base. Same setting, same tamp, shot after shot.
Pre-order
Calibre is on pre-order, so you can order it now even while it shows 0 in stock. We expect to ship it from our warehouse in Denmark in November 2026. You pay at checkout as usual, and we'll email you as soon as yours is on its way. Questions? Chat with us
How the impact mechanism works
Hold the base and rotate the handle: detents click through four settings, and the one you've chosen shows in the viewing window. Press down and the handle loads a spring, then releases an internal impact block against the tamping base. Let go and the mechanism resets itself, while your setting stays exactly where you left it.
What you get
- Four force settings – 15, 20, 25 and 30 kg, chosen by turning the handle and readable at a glance.
- Self-levelling – The design keeps the base aligned with the basket, so you don't lock a tilt into the puck.
- Concentric rings on the face – The 58 mm base leaves a ring pattern on the puck, designed to encourage more even water distribution across and through the coffee bed.
- Automatic reset – Nothing to re-cock or re-dial between shots.
- Aluminium and stainless steel – Comes with a silicone protective base, in the six ORBI colours.
In your routine
- Pick a setting. Rotate the handle and check the window.
- Distribute. Level the grounds first, ideally with the Varia ORBI Distributor.
- Tamp. Seat Calibre on the basket and press to trigger the impact. Release, and it's reset for the next shot.
Our take
How hard you tamp matters less than tamping the same way every time. Calibre gives you a number you can write next to your recipe, which takes the guesswork out of dialling in: fix the tamp, then change only the grind. If you're stepping up from the tamper that comes with ORBI, this is the upgrade that makes your routine repeatable.

Frequently asked questions
How do I change the tamping force?
Hold the base and rotate the handle. It clicks through 15, 20, 25 and 30 kg, and the selected number shows in the viewing window. Pick one setting and keep it while you dial in with grind size, so you only change one thing at a time.
Do I need to reset it after each tamp?
No. The mechanism resets when you release the handle, and your selected setting stays in place. Rotate the handle only when you want a different force.
What's the difference between an impact tamper and a regular spring tamper?
On Calibre, pressing the handle loads a spring that releases an internal impact block against the base at the setting you chose, so the force comes from the mechanism, not from how hard you lean in. The four settings let you choose that force instead of living with one fixed spring.
Does it fit ORBI and other 58 mm baskets?
Calibre has a 58 mm self-levelling base and is part of the Varia ORBI range, so it's made for ORBI Portable and ORBI PRO's 58 mm basket. 58 mm baskets from other brands vary slightly, and Varia hasn't published the exact base tolerance yet, so chat with us before using it with another machine.
