Meet the basket that made our tasting bench go quiet. The IMS Laser Brew Step Down is the very first IMS coffee filter perforated entirely by laser. It's also shaped like nothing else in your drawer: a narrower, taller coffee bed designed for more control over flow and extraction.
Why step down?
By stepping the basket down, IMS builds a deeper, slimmer puck. According to IMS, this geometry is designed to raise extraction yield with the same dose, or to get comparable results with less coffee. For light-roast lovers like us, that means more room to chase sweetness and clarity without wasting beans.
Laser, not punch
- Laser ablation: a focused laser removes steel with no contact. No tooling, no burrs, no wear.
- Shaped micro-holes: every aperture has a precise profile that controls how water flows, with micron-level hole precision and an engineered, repeatable open area.
- Electropolished finish: smooth, non-stick and easy to clean.
- 100% made in Italy by IMS, who have been making stainless filters since 1946.

What is a step down basket?
It's a filter basket that narrows towards the bottom, which creates a taller, slimmer coffee bed. IMS designed the Laser Brew Step Down this way for more control over flow and extraction.
Will I use less coffee?
According to IMS, the geometry is designed to increase extraction yield at the same dose, or to reach comparable results with less coffee.
How is it different from an IMS Competition or Big Bang basket?
Competition and Big Bang baskets are perforated mechanically or by photo-etching. Laser Brew is the first IMS filter perforated entirely by laser, with shaped micro-holes and an electropolished finish.
Which size should I pick?
Choose 2-cup at 28 mm or 32 mm height, or 1-cup at 28 mm.
Does it fit my portafilter?
Yes, if you have a 58 mm portafilter. The Laser Brew Step Down is a 58 mm basket.
