Overview
The PUQ Prep Navigator is a one-touch automatic distribution tool from PUQ, the makers of PUQpress. Place your portafilter under the Navigator, press once, and its needles break up clumps and level the coffee bed – the WDT (Weiss Distribution Technique) step, automated.
Who is it for?
Specialty cafés that want every barista to prep the puck the same way, barista training setups, and home baristas who want café-level consistency.

Frequently asked questions
Can I use the Navigator with baskets bigger than 22 g?
It is optimised for 18–22 g baskets. With larger baskets or doses you may still need to adjust distribution by hand.
Does the Navigator replace tamping?
No. The Navigator only handles distribution. You still tamp afterwards – ideally with a PUQpress.
Which profile should I start with?
Start with Standard. In busy service, try Speedy. For maximum precision, for example in competitions or roasting labs, use Precision.
How often do I need to charge it?
With 500–800 cycles per charge, most cafés charge it about once a day, depending on volume.
Does the Navigator really reduce channelling?
An even, clump-free puck lets water flow through the coffee more uniformly, which helps against channelling. Grind size, dose and tamping still matter, so treat the Navigator as one part of a consistent routine.
Which needles do I need?
There are two needle options: one for 18–20 g baskets and one for 20–22 g baskets. Choose the one that matches the dose you use most.
What is delay mode?
Delay mode lets the Navigator start its cycle after a set delay instead of immediately, for example after grinding.
Is it better than distributing by hand with a WDT tool?
Hand WDT works well. The Navigator makes the same movement every time, so the result does not depend on who is on bar or how rushed they are, and it saves time in busy service.
