Overview
Most bad mornings at the brew bar start with a guess. A heaped scoop, a pour that felt about right, a shot that ran fast and you never found out why. The Timemore Black Mirror Basic 3 takes the guessing out. Set your dripper or cup on it and it shows you what is really going on: how much coffee, how much water, how fast and for how long.
One coffee scale, three ways to brew
A slider on the side switches the Basic 3 on and moves between three modes, so the scale follows the way you brew, not the other way round.
- Espresso mode: put your cup down and it tares itself. The timer starts when the shot starts to flow and stops when you lift the cup, so your hands stay on the portafilter.
- Pour-over mode: weigh your dose, press Ratio and watch your coffee-to-water ratio and flow rate update live. The timer waits for your first pour.
- Regular mode: a manual timer with ratio and flow rate on hand, for French press, AeroPress or anything else you weigh.
Built to keep the numbers honest
Timemore developed the Basic 3 together with 2022 World Barista Champion Anthony Douglas. A custom load cell reads in 0.1 g steps from 0.2 g up to 2 kg, and an electromagnetic shield stops magnetic dosing cups and nearby appliances from nudging the reading. At 2 cm thin and 14 × 12 cm, it sits neatly on the counter, packs into a travel bag and fits on many espresso drip trays (measure yours first).
The wrap-around silicone mat grips the scale edge to edge and channels spills away. Flip it over and it becomes a rest for your portafilter. The body is IPX3 splash-resistant, so a drip from the kettle is no drama. Just keep it away from the tap.
Charge it, then forget about it
The 1,600 mAh battery gives up to 24 hours of screen-on time, which Timemore puts at roughly 280 five-minute pour-overs. When it runs low, USB-C takes it back to full in about 3.5 hours.

Frequently asked questions
What's the difference between the Timemore Basic 3 and the Basic 2?
The Basic 3 is smaller (140 × 120 × 20 mm) and lighter (300 g), reads from 0.2 g instead of 0.5 g, and adds three timer modes, espresso auto-tare, a live brew ratio, electromagnetic shielding and IPX3 splash resistance. Both read in 0.1 g steps up to 2 kg and charge via USB-C.
Will the Basic 3 fit under my espresso machine?
It is 2 cm high with a 14 × 12 cm footprint, so it fits on many drip trays. Measure the space between your drip tray and spouts, and remember your cup sits on top. If space is very tight, the smaller Timemore Black Mirror Nano may suit you better.
How does the auto timer work?
In Espresso mode the scale tares when you set your cup down, starts timing when coffee starts to flow and stops when you lift the cup. In Pour-over mode the timer waits for your first pour. In Regular mode you start and stop it yourself.
How do I switch between grams and ounces, or turn the sound off?
Press the Tare button six times quickly to switch between g and oz. Hold the Timer button for about four seconds to turn the beep on or off.
How long does the battery last?
Up to 24 hours of screen-on time from the 1,600 mAh battery, and about 3.5 hours to recharge via USB-C. The scale goes to standby after 3 minutes of inactivity, or up to 15 minutes while the timer runs. For the most accurate readings, avoid weighing while it charges.
Is the Timemore Basic 3 waterproof?
It is IPX3 splash-resistant, so drips and small spills are fine. It is not waterproof: never rinse or submerge it, keep water out of the USB-C port and wipe it with a soft damp cloth.
